If you record metal guitar, you REALLY want to pay attention here! 🙂
Recently, I had my eyes opened up by some of the best recording engineers in the business! I had a chance to hang out with Bob Marlette (Rob Zombie, Anvil, Shinedown, Alice Cooper), Cameron Webb (Motörhead, Megadeth, Sum 41, NOFX) and Ulrich Wild (Deftones, Pantera, Breaking Benjamin, Strung Out) at their studios! They were kind enough to show me how they record their metal guitars. If you don’t know who those guys are, there’s a good chance they have credits on some of your favorite recordings!
I have to give a major shoutout to Mr. Warren Huart over at Produce Like A Pro for setting this all up! Thank you!!
The technique is simple; blend the mics on a mixer and then record that. Watch the video to see the whole process from start to finish!
One of the added bonus’s of this method is that it forces you to make a decision right at the source and not be left constantly tweaking after the fact. It’s quite liberating to be honest.
The next time you read some nonsense on GearSluts that the reason you’re not getting the tone you’re after is because the gear you’re using isn’t expensive enough, keep this in mind- You’re recording metal. You don’t need to drop thousands on expensive preamps. In fact, for guitars you’ll probably want to do the exact opposite.
I want to hear from you! Try this technique out and let me know how you make out!
